from ghosts to the soloist to hugh jackman

haven't been to the movies in a while.

yesterday, me and my friends xtn and malou trooped to edwards to catch 3 movies!

we started with ghosts of girlfriend's past. it was good. see my review, it's already been posted

next was the soloist. the movie's sub-story on the phlight of homeless men and women in LA induced me to shed some tears. it's not a great movie but the story is wonderful. my friend anselmo told me earlier that he didn't like it. he thought it was confused on what the story is all about. review will come out next.

the last movie we saw at exactly 12:20AM was X-MEN. hugh jackman is phenomenal. he can be on broadway and be credible. he can host the academy and he is credible. he is a beast-like creature with huge torso in x-men and he is impossibly credible. how does he do it. the movie was actually not so good; however, jackman is an enormous presence onscreen. i interviewed him once for the prestige and he doesn't look in person anywhere near the physical attribute of his wolverine character. amazing. review will come out soon.

theaters were full this weekend. i suspect that over-all box-office this weekend will continue the winning trend of hollywood. thank goodness for that.

i was home at 3. good thing it's saturday today.

ghosts of girlfriends past

matthew mcconaughey is connor mead. he is your typical celebrity photographer who changes girlfriends as often as he clicks his camera. he is so good at hooking women that they don't mind being the nth weekend date for the goodlooking playboy. in one instance, he even had to break up with three women all at the same time. how he actually does it is something that made me enjoy this movie.

going into the theater i was so ready to use every imanigable review cliches, like comparing the movie to "ghosts of bad movies past", but then, quite surprisingly, the premise and plot actually worked! yes, it's a chick flick and you could see the ending just by looking at the movie's poster but then perhaps the mention of the philippines during one of the key scenes somewhat influenced me, i dont know but i liked the movie.

jennifer garner is jenny peroti. connor's childhood sweetheart who once left him brokenhearted during prom night. this incident would trigger the change in connor's attitude towards women.

jenny and connor meets again after so many years during the weekend wedding of connor's younger brother, paul. connor's arrival is greeted with both excitement and fear. the ladies are excited to be in bed with him (apparently, weddings are now considered sex fling haven) while the bride and jenny fears that he may ruin the entire wedding just by his mere presence.

typical of connor, he starts making his presence felt during the wedding rehearsal dinner. he tells everyone why getting married is wrong, blah, blah, blah. he fondles the bride's mom. he spills secrets to the bridesmaids. he does everything that is expected of him.

unfortunately for him, his dead uncle wayne (michael douglas, in a role that required no effort at all) comes back and warns him that he will be visited by three ghosts who will take him through his life's journey to find the reason behind his insensitivity towards love and committed relationships.

should i tell you more? you already know where the story is headed.

the movie has some very funny moments and i specially liked the casting of pretty daniel de wulf as connor's assistant. she makes sure that her character's indian accent is not supposed to be funny thus she makes it very cute with her witty remarks.

it is a delight to see jennifer garner in a romantic comedy. she doesn't have to work much in this movie but one can tell that she had fun. matthew mcconaughey is his usual character. i cannot fault him for this. he seems typecast in this kind of role and he may be making good money out of it, otherwise, why would he be doing it?

i got no other complaints. reo speedwagon dominates the soundtrack. need i say more?

2009 bad headlines continues...

can someone please twitter me what's so wrong with 2009? it's barely 5 months into the year and it is shaping up to be one of those years you'd remember more for the bad headlines than anything else.

the economy is slumping - it's actually slowing down, feds say. then the swine flu - yeah, the H1N1 flu, hit mexico, crossed to the US and is now creating quite a huge scare all over the world! omg!

and now our favorite hollywood couples are separating.

first came out news that mel gibson and his wife of 29 years have filed for divorce. the couple used to be role models of marital bliss but when a young east european model came along and, voila, marriage turns suddenly sour.

today, sean penn and robin wright penn, married for over 13 years, announced that they are likewise separating. what!?

i wonder who else out there are going to announce their headline-making separation next.

thank goodness for heidi and spencer for restoring my faith in hollywood marriages! lol. yes, the OC couple/brats got married over the weekend although, unfortunately, had their cancun honeymoon cut short due to... yeah, yeah, the mexican flu. it was still a good headline over at TMZ.

it's not a perfect world, i suppose. but whatever, it is yellow to me.

oh yeah, more bad news. adam lambert is still on AI. i find the guy actually very good but also very boring.

i only caught the last 2 minutes of last night's show because i was so captivated by last night's criminal minds. was the guy who played the serial killer tha same guy on the verizon commercials? the one with the "whole network following you"? twitter me please...
